This “Senefo” couple is inspired in the Malian culture. The Senefo (or Senufo) are famous as musicians and superb carvers of wood sculpture, masks and figurines. Their art inspired 20th-century European artists such as Pablo Picasso. Old pieces of Senefo art are found in many leading museums of the world. In this work, the man has a bird on the head, representing that he is a ruler. Birds were used to send messages. It is traditional to see the bird on the head of the man. The woman has a jar on the head. When a baby is born, the following week is the naming day, and every woman will carry these jars with holy water. They put special leaves and water inside and wash the child, who will be blessed with long life and good health.
